Florida 1st Congressional District sits in the Gulf South and peninsula. Its political identity was forged in the union halls of the mid-twentieth century, when industrial labor and the Democratic party became, for working people, two faces of the same political fact. That identity held for 8 consecutive presidential elections.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Florida 1st Congressional District peaked at ninety-three points in 1892; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1964 election delivered the district to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fourteen points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.

The economic and demographic context is severe. The median household income of $78,510 is among the lowest at this geographic scale; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
