Demographics
Cookeville's Putnam County metro has posted some of Tennessee's steeper population growth rates over the past decade, driven partly by manufacturing relocation and university employment that skew its voter pool younger and more blue-collar than Nashville's suburbs.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Cookeville, TN peaked at fifty-four points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the metro to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. The median household income of $55,135 is among the lowest at this geographic scale; 17% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
